So, you are a CD Man?
For sure! You have to remember that I started DJing back in the 1980s. It took at least 3-4 fellas to get the gear to the gigs. That also meant at least 3 cars. The speakers were about 4 feet tall and you had to have about 3 full record creates to rock a 4 hour party. All that Vinyl was heavy as hell and all we wanted for Christmas was a way to make our record crates smaller and or lighter to carry.
So now you have CDs/CDRs/MP3s and my wish has come true. I know some DJs still spin vinyl, but Ill never go back to those days. The flexibility of digital media is just ridiculous! I can record and create custom CDs, plus I can carry 100 songs in my pocket on a thumb drive? Wow! Thats Big Pimpin right there.
What are your DJ sets like now?
Nowadays, my sets are mainly Old School. I like to say that I spin music for Grown Folks. This consists of tracks from just about all genres. I could start off with some Marvin Gaye, flow into some Stevie Wonder, come out of that and hit ya with some Frankie Beverly & Maze and then slide right into some R. Kelly.
Basically, my version of: Grown Folks music is Feel Good music.
Since, I work a lot of clubs and private events, I never really know what Im gonna play from gig to gig to get the folks dancing, but reading the room is something that Alex taught me how to do and I still relay on that skill today.
Whats next for you?
I want to Travel! Id like to travel, doing my thang for the masses in different area codes. Id like to break that Northern California barrier. I know its close to reality for me.
I was at the club about 2 weeks ago and a customer asked if I would travel to Texas and work my magic at her sisters 40th birthday party. Im all in on that invite and Ill definitely hustle to make that happen.
One of my goals is to also DJ in Las Vegas in any capacity. To me, Vegas would symbolize that I have made it! From there, Id like to secure a booking agent and DJ full time.
