Vicious Rumors CD-1986 + Bonus Tracks Mike Marshall-Soul of the Bay CD-2008

Vicious Rumors

Michael Marshall
Soul of the Bay

MP3 Ready! At the recording session, the group consisted of the writers only: Thompson, Marshall and Hill. Also present were Jay, Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster. Jay claimed that he brought Thomas and Denzil in to beef up the song. I told him that RUMORS had gone through enough changes and did not need to be BEEFED UP! He told me that we now had 24 tracks instead of just 4 and that he was going to fill them up with whatever he thought would make the song sound better. I was not happy with this.

Rumors Original 12inch-1986I knew that RUMORS sounded just fine the way it was. If not, why did he call the next day after hearing our 4 track? After our conversation, Jay set out to prove me wrong. He started saying "I hear a guitar in this song, I want to lay down a funky guitar lick". He then got on the phone a called a guitar player from another local band THE FREAKY EXECUTIVES.

This guy came in and tried his hardest to play along with the all electronic sequenced track but in the battle of Acoustics versus Synthesizers, the guitar lost. The guitar parts were recorded on tracks 22 and 23 of the original master and never made it to the final mix.

After loosing face with the guitar idea, Jay, suggested that he sing background vocals with Michael on the chorus of the song. I had a cold that day and felt that maybe I wouldn't sound good. I had  sang background with Michael before, even on some versions of the demos - so, Jay went into the vocal booth and started to sing with Michael. Jay sounded terrible. Even his friend Denzil Foster told him so. After about 20 minutes of re-takes, I suggested that I would try to sing the parts with Michael. Jay agreed and stepped out of the vocal booth. I was nervous due to my cold.

On the first vocal take everybody started to jump up and down saying, "THAT'S IT!, THAT'S IT!". I felt really good after that and started to concentrate on my vocals. About a half-hour later, the vocals were done. Denzil was loving the song by now and asked Alex if he could add a string line that he was thinking of to the song, Alex agreed and let Denzil play one of his keyboards. After that, the song was mixed. The mixing team was  Alex Hill , Thomas McElroy, Denzil Foster and Jay King. Michael and I just sat back and listened.

A long time friend and fellow songwriter, Kevin Moore joined Timex Social Club, to replace Valerie Watson. Kevin did sign with Danya Records.

RUMORS was released on: February 2, 1986 on JAY RECORDS. Jay King never presented Timex Social Club with a true recording agreement/ contract. All we got was a letter of Intent to sign. Meanwhile, Rumors was gaining airplay across the country and rapidly climbing the charts, but we were not signed to Jay Records. So, in late April of 1986, David Lucchesi , Ceo of DANYA/REALITY RECORDS, contacted the group.
