The RUN DMC tour wanted us back as an opening act. We negotiated a $2,000
per show raise in our contract with them and called Michael’s manager with
the good news. As soon as he heard that Michael would not get more than 25%
he declined saying that Michael would not go on tour for 25% (even with the
raise).
We held auditions for three days and finally hired local vocalist FRED BUSBY
to take the place of Michael. Together we finished the RUN DMC tour. While
out on the road, friends and family told us that Michael had started a group
called THE REAL TIMEX SOCIAL CLUB. We thought how could this be?, when
we all were still under contract to DANYA RECORDS as TIMEX SOCIAL CLUB?
Michael then said in some interviews that he was the sole writer of RUMORS
and that he created the name.
Meanwhile, Jay was saying the same things in interviews and convinced WARNER
BROS. RECORDS to sign a production deal with him. He immediately recorded
a song called "JEALOUSY" which was an answer song to RUMORS.
While in New York, a promoter friend of ours introduced us to a team of young
black attorneys. We hired them to handle proceedings with Lucchesi and King.
It was about this time that we formally asked for a release from our DANYA
RECORDS contract. We were denied and told that Michael was finishing the
album without us and the album would be released under the original group
name.
Again faced with income problems, we started booking dates with just about
everyone who would have us: JERMAINE JACKSON, MIDNIGHT STAR, THE S.O.S.
BAND, NEW EDITION, FORCE MD’s, DOUG E. FRESH, KOOL AND THE GANG, and even
dates by ourselves.
In conclusion, our
lawyers worked out a deal to get us writer’s credit on "JEALOUSY"
and a release from our contract with DANYA RECORDS.
